@Waveney The problem is the wording. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion".
It doesn't say the president or even the states. Why this supreme Court over ruled Roe versus wade and let the states decide. Same with the ten commandments in schools.

It doesn't apply to religion. Why the ten commandments in schools is allowed for certain states.
I don't like it. Yet it must say no religion specifically.
It's all how you interpret it. The primary job of the supreme Court. If it's written too vague, it can mean anything. And Republicans are well known for letter of the law.
The spirit of the law doesn't matter to them. Nor does it say anything in the constitution about the spirit of the law.
It's all so disgusting for me because of the rigamortis type thinking. Unfortunately I know when a computer program is being literal. I see the actions that it takes and know where the problem is.
