It really is annoying that people think Trump is just ignorant or generally demented. He seems to be both of those things, but he's also dishonest and sociopathic.
No, he's not always untruthful. Sometimes, when he thinks it will go over well, he'll say it's about the oil and the economic deals to be had.
Thing is, even with tariffs, how often does a reporter dare ask Trump about his own personal cut of the deals he makes?
Emoluments, nah. People voted for him knowing he was corrupt and a liar. Why?
I think they wanted a piece of the action.

@MistyCee You know, I have been having a side-thought that his performance is just an act. Like you say, he isn't intelligent and he does show distinct signs of dementia, but he's not an imbecile either. And although I chastised Bill Maher for praising his social etiquette at a dinner he had with him, Maher did quip an observation that his public performance seems to him to be... just a performance because he does know how to act appropriately, adult-like, and charmingly in private.
All that being said, the saddest part of this whole reign of his is that he and his cronies are really just pulling off a heist of epic proportions ("Epic Fury") with everyone drinking from the trough like ants slurping down sugared borax... until they implode from their bloated greed... but only after feeding their queen. So, now we just have to wait for that mass implosion of their colony.

@MarkPaul Yup, forget about the politics and read about his life before.
He's always been a promoter rather than a builder, to put it nicely, and a snake oil salesman to put it not so nicely.
And now, he's civilly and criminally immune, running the government like a criminal syndicate and paying his shills a piece of the proceeds of his con.
He's been chased out of towns before, but this time, it's the US that he's running into bankruptcy and at his age, all he needs to do is run out the clock and he doesn't even have to worry about a bankruptcy judge questioning his conduct.

@MistyCee No, no... he's not civilly immune. In fact, a judge approved that civil lawsuits directly against him for harm cause by his direct involvement in the 6 January insurrection can proceed. And, while he can still quite a bit of more damage, don't underestimate those who, like Michael Cohen, will realize taking a bullet for him is a one-way ticket to certain death.
