Gunman Killed by Armed Security After Ramming Vehicle Into Michigan Temple With Preschool in West Bloomfield

A potentially devastating incident at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, was swiftly contained Thursday afternoon when armed security personnel stopped a suspected gunman who had driven a vehicle into the synagogue, authorities said.

Officials described the situation as an “active shooter” event, prompting a rapid response from multiple law enforcement agencies and a precautionary lockdown of nearby schools.

Police sources reported that the suspect crashed a car into the building before exiting with a rifle.

Armed security engaged the individual, fatally shooting him.

The vehicle caught fire inside the synagogue, and investigators discovered what appeared to be a significant quantity of explosives, leading authorities to secure the scene for further examination.

No students or staff were harmed, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard confirmed.

One of the lead security personnel was struck by the vehicle and taken to the hospital; authorities said he is expected to recover. Officials confirmed that everyone inside the building was accounted for, according to CBS News.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal agents were on-site, coordinating with state and local law enforcement.

Agencies involved included the West Bloomfield Police Department, Michigan State Police, and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators continue to examine the suspect’s vehicle for explosives and any potential accomplices.

Temple Israel, the nation’s largest Reform synagogue, houses a preschool and community spaces, heightening concerns for children and families.

Local schools—including West Bloomfield High School, Middle School, Doherty Elementary, and Bloomfield Hills schools—were placed in secure mode as a precaution.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit advised all Jewish organizations in the area to follow “lockout protocol” and urged residents to avoid the vicinity while authorities responded.

Officials are assessing whether the explosives were operational and whether other individuals were involved. Security at other houses of worship in the region has been heightened, with additional patrols and law enforcement monitoring.

The incident demonstrates the critical role of trained security personnel and coordinated law enforcement.
