Attempted Robbery Ends in 28-Round Gunfight, Armed Victim Shoots Attacker

Police say an attempted robbery in downtown Mobile ended in a deadly exchange of gunfire after an armed victim fought back, firing shots that killed a would-be robber during a confrontation late Sunday night.

The shooting was one of two separate incidents that occurred within minutes of each other and about a block apart as large crowds filled downtown following Joe Cain Day Mardi Gras celebrations. Authorities emphasized the incidents were not related.

According to Mobile Police Chief William Jackson, the second shooting happened in a parking lot area near Dauphin Street, between Joachim and Conception streets, shortly after the first incident nearby.

Investigators say a 21-year-old man attempted to rob another individual, reportedly targeting jewelry. During the confrontation, both men were armed, and gunfire erupted.

Police say the two exchanged a total of 28 rounds.

The alleged robber, identified by authorities as Jill Valley Alexander, 21, was struck by gunfire and later died from his injuries. Officials say the fatal shot was fired by the intended victim.

After reviewing the circumstances, investigators determined the surviving individual was acting in self-defense and will not face criminal charges.

Authorities stated that evidence gathered at the scene indicated the shooting occurred during an active robbery attempt. Based on the investigation so far, police concluded the victim’s use of force was legally justified under Alabama self-defense law.

The incident remains under investigation, but officials say no charges are expected against the victim.

Earlier that night, a separate shooting roughly a block away left seven people wounded — five men and two women ranging in age from 24 to 30. One victim remains in critical condition. Police believe that incident stemmed from a dispute and is unrelated to the attempted robbery.
