The Ancient Egyptians used to believe thoughts and memories were in the heart and the brain was a useless organ.
During the mummification process, the organs of the deceased like the heart and lungs were carefully removed and placed into canopic jars.
But the brain was removed by inserting a metal rod with a small hook on the end up into the nose and scrambling the brain about until it liquified and oozed out the nostrils.
