Americans.. how can you claim to be the richest country in the world and not be able to afford universal healthcare...

...when at least 80 other "poorer" countries can?

The thing is, the more that the government "gives" you (i.e. takes your money in taxes and spends it on what the government decides you can have), the less free you are to make your own choices.

Many Americans prefer to decide for ourselves how our money is spent. It is a different point of view than is common in many other counties. It is an American thing. Most non-Americans (and more than a few young Americans) just don't get it.

@justbob Then the next time you or one of your loved ones get sick, be grateful that you "chose" to pay through the nose for your treatment. Here's hoping you can afford it!

Plus that wasn't what my post was saying.

Let's just say you are born with Epilepsy, Astma, ... take your pick. And you have to pay around 300 Dollar US per month, just to pay for your treatment. I mean, what else are you going to do? Get seizures? Die from an astma attack? That's 300 dollar US every month, that you need to pay just to live a "normal" life. Not because you made a concious descison, but because you were born that way. That's 300 dollar US, that you can't really invest in any "freedom", because you want to live.

Now tell me again, how less free that person is if that cost was suppressed by a national safety net?

Many Americans like to talk about a concept called "negative freedom", which preaches: "you can do x, y and z, because you are free". But the moment you are born in a poor family x, y and z suddenly becomes less obtainable for you because you grow up in difficult circumstances. That inherritance, weighs through for most people in that bracket, and even though they are free to do certain things, they will never be able too. Not being able too, is an extreme limit on your "freedom". Being free to go to college is worth nothing when you are not able too.

@justbob the problem is, few recognize that they would have more freedom if the health care burden was eliminated. Plenty of people work for large companies specifically for the health package. This stifles small business and entrepreneurs.
