Trump Does NOT Have the Sole Power to Forever Bar Ukraine From Joining NATO.

NATO Treaty

Article 10

The Parties may, by unanimous agreement, invite any other European State in a position to further the principles of this Treaty and to contribute to the security of the North Atlantic area to accede to this Treaty. Any State so invited may become a Party to the Treaty by depositing its instrument of accession with the Government of the United States of America. The Government of the United States of America will inform each of the Parties of the deposit of each such instrument of accession.

Article 12

After the Treaty has been in force for ten years, or at any time thereafter, the Parties shall, if any of them so requests, consult together for the purpose of reviewing the Treaty, having regard for the factors then affecting peace and security in the North Atlantic area, including the development of universal as well as regional arrangements under the Charter of the United Nations for the maintenance of international peace and security.

He could block submission of a treaty vote in the Senate to favor Ukraine join NATO while he is president.

He could ask NATO as a body to review the NATO Treaty for a possible amendment regarding Ukraine while he is president.

But that's all.

Putting Trump completely aside why does anyone want Ukraine in NATO? Serious question. Seems so silly now that the original purpose of NATO is completely gone.

Better that Ukraine be in NATO than Russia conquer Ukraine.

And the original purpose of NATO is very much still alive.

@beckyromero Why? Russia is not some great evil force and if you understood the situation there you would know that the war started because Ukraine was 'encouraged' to join Russia. The war in Ukraine is the fault of the west not Russia. In the last few years I have made friends with multiple Ukrainians. They don't blame Russia. They blame NATO.

Russia invaded Ukraine back in 2014 and again in 2022, not the other way around.

A few friends in a country of around 40 million does not an excuse make.

@beckyromero Actually Ukraine was occupying Russia and Russia decided to stop the killing by the Ukrainians and kick them out of Russia. The Eastern part of Ukraine had voted to join Russia. Russia waited and then enacted legislation stating that they accepted the will of the people of Eastern Ukraine and made that region part of Russia. You may not be aware of the 30,000 people in Eastern Ukraine that were killed by Ukraine before such votes were held. I know about them from people who used to live there not some newspaper report. A young lady was sitting in my dining room joining my family for Christmas dinner when she very matter of factly told me that her mother's house was shelled by Ukraine on Christmas Eve. That was in 2014. Sweet young lady my son was dating. She spoke English very clearly although she did have a Ukrainian accent.

The Eastern part of Ukraine had voted to join Russia.

🤣 While it was occupied by Russia.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@beckyromero No the vote took place almost a decade before the war started. Then Russia negotiated a peace treaty to prevent any war. Europe and the US used them to more fully arm Ukraine.

@hippyjoe1955 There was no legal vote or referendum in 2014. The referendum that the Russian separatists tried organized was completely bogus. The reported outcome of 22M for and 550K against separation could not be verified.

@MoveAlong So says you. Others in the region completely disagree with you. I will go by what they said.
