Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant insists "tariffs are not taxes on consumers" and then announces there will be a reduction in tariffs on coffee and bananas to reduce the extra cost they created to American consumers.

We don't grow coffee beans or bananas, except maybe Hawaii. So how do tariffs help domestic banana and coffee farming in the U.S.? Since there’s no American banana or coffee farmer to buy from instead, the tariff doesn’t redirect demand domestically. It just makes the imported product more expensive.
