I find it weird that Zohran Mamdani can never run for President, but former UK PM Boris Johnson can...

Can he? A foreigner? Or has Mr. Johnson taken US citizenship as well as being British?

Irrespective of his own politics, and whichever party he might join, I think it wrong that Boris Johnson could do that; simply because he is not American. Any more than I'd want any US politicians and their associates trying to run my country. Including that bloke with a fetish for the letter 'X'.

Mr. Mamdani was born in Africa, but overlooking his political views; perhaps he has more claim to being a US politician than Mr. Johnson.

His family emigrated to the USA when he was only seven, he was educated to Degree level in America, and his career has been of first a housing counsellor then in local politics, in New York, since then.

Boris Johnson does have considerable political experience, whatever you think of his ability and views, but I'd think him potentially a US politician only if he emigrates to the USA and takes full US citizenship.

Why can't Zohran Mamdani not become a Presidential candidate though? NOT whether you'd vote for or against him, or his likely popularity generally, but whether there are constitutional and legal barriers to him doing so.

@wishforthenight Thankyou for explaining it.

I had an idea Boris Johnson is not a native of Britain but not that he was born in the USA!
@ArishMell I mean he is British. He has British parents. But Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson has about as much in common with British values as Trump.

@wishforthenight Indeed! :-)

Interesting -- I never knew Johnson was born in NYC.

Well, he’d have to live here for 14 years first, but otherwise, yeah. Weird for sure 🙃
@Zaphod42 Apparently not.

According to US law, “natural-born” means citizenship at birth, either being born in America or having American parents abroad (which is why Ted Cruz, born in Canada, is eligible).

Even if someone lives in the US for decades, they cannot obtain “natural-born” status, so Mamdani is disqualified from ever becoming president.

@wishforthenight
Requirements to be US President:

Born in the US
At least 35 years old
Lived in the US for at least 14 years
@Zaphod42 Exactly. All of the above.

So yes, at this point BJ cannot run for president, but he could in theory... Mamdani on the other hand, no.

A weird artifact of our Constitution.
