Who WOULDN’T want to give their credit card and bank account info to AI, and tell it to just go shopping for them . . . ?

Amazon is suing Comet. Not the mysterious comet hiding behind the sun, which Harvard Professor Avi Loeb claims is a spaceship. (In fact, Professor Loeb made this claim about at least 4 other comets and asteroids). Amazon is suing “comet the shopping bot”. (see link below).

Yeah, I’ve never heard of this shopping bot either. It’s a startup. And apparently users are handing over their credit card numbers, debit cards, bank info etc. and giving it permission to go shopping on their behalf.

What could go wrong?

A more detailed explanation might be provided forthcoming from the People’s Army Hacking Brigade Army division in China, but my concise overview is: your account data could be stolen, and you could be impoverished. Or possibly Comet the shopping bot could get confused and order thousands of dollars of stuff you don’t need or want.

Take my personal experience. I ordered a toilet plunger for $13.74 from Amazon this morning. Then found my missing plunger, and cancelled the order 30 minutes later. Amazon’s own bot says it has received both my requests, and will let me know what happens next. I’m not sure telling Comet the shopping robot to scour the entire world wide web with my Visa account number to find “the best deal on 5 star rated toilet plungers” would have put me in a safer place.

Comet the shopping robot is the brainchild of a company called “Perplexity”. Stop laughing . . . I am not making this name up. Perplexity was founded 2 years ago by a couple of guys named Johnny Ho and Aravind Srinivas. They claim their company is worth $20 billion, but since Perplexity is brand new and not listed on any stock exchange that number could be imaginary.

In addition to the Amazon lawsuit, Perplexity was also being sued by The New York Times, BBC, Dow Jones, and other big names for unleashing “undisclosed web crawlers with spoofed user-agent strings to scrape the content of websites”. (Exact quote)

So everyone’s trust and confidence in Comet the shopping bot should be high. If they’ve already been sued by so many companies, certainly they’ve learned something from this, and will now handle your bank info securely and discretely, right?

I’m just sayin’ . . .

I can only see gambling addicts of videogames where you receive mystery loot boxes instead of a distinct and guaranteed item, enjoying this concept.

Sure, few and far in between might enjoy randomly setting some budget for an AI and having it search for things based off the j retests you program into it, in order for you to be “surprised” by the bot and the deliveries you’d receive.

But there’s not many other than YouTubers and content creators that I believe would truly enjoy it.

It’s basically next level materialism as you’d end up with products you don’t even know you’d enjoy or need or want. And your house would quickly become littered with what would classify as “Junk” if you allowed it to persist.

However the wealthy have often relied on hiring house decorators to buy random furnitures and paintings and to feng shui their places of living. Or to be a wedding planner and organize a lavish wedding party. So the concept is not entirely new. But it feels increasingly dystopian when you have AI perform these functions on your behalf instead of a human.

@AuRevoir the comet shopping box is another black box - like Google itself.

when you do a google search, you are served up a mélange alternatives, with "promoted" sites always near the top. Same thing when you shop at Amazon - promoted stuff always at the top, even if your search phrase included "general foods".

this is what is happeningn inside the Comet box.. There are hidden promotional deals between Comet and other websites, which will interfere with you getting the lowest price or the actual features you specified.

suppose all of Comet's purchases on your behalf came from Temu?

Well, I'd certainly not deliberately give any AI company my details, and I agree with you that it looks suspicious. I would go as far as asking if "Perplexity" is an elaborate fraud.

A small, new company not listed but claining gigantic value? Oh aye? Yes, and I own Iran's oil-industry.

Same company being sued by several major organisations for unauthorised interception?

[Though neither would I use a huge foreign company when I need buy a new loo brush I can no doubt find in local shops, and pay for by cash, or at least debit not credit card!]

If people were not so lazy and actually went to the Shop/store themselves it would be so much better. I don't order anything online from anyone. I like the store I want to see what I am paying for in front of me.
As far as I am concerned Amazon etc don't exist.

@meJess If a person needs a bot to shop for them, they should disqualify them from being allowed to vote as clearly they lack the ability to make an informed decision themselves.
