Certainly....but then how would you call up people in time of war ? If required.
How would you call people for jury service ?
Is it right or fair that a section of society should no longer be able to send communication to others ?

The USPS is supported by its sales. It's not a social service.

@CougarLisa yes only partially...they are deep in the red

@lpthehermit for the first quarter of this year it actually made over $140 million. But, yes, you are correct, it does not typically generate enough revenue to support itself.
My point is; the USPS is not a social safety net that is a black hole that only sucks money out of the budget. It generates an income. The argument can also be made it is a matter of national security, both governmental and public. Last I knew, EBT cards were delivered in the mail.

@CougarLisa Yes, although it's not perfect, it's not money being tossed into a dumpster fire!

So called "junk" mail delivery is paid for by the companies which send it.

By law, entitlements HAVE higher priority. Postal service is on the discretionary spending portion, which is less than 30 percent of the whole budget.
DEY FOOD STAMP, Social Security, all that WELFARE is part of Entitlement Spending and it is on automatic increase each year, whether needed or not.

@Reason10 Social Security is considered an entitlement, incorrectly, in my opinion. However, it is funded independently and not part of the budget the other entitlements are tied to.
