Will the suspension of food stamps bring democrats back to the government shutdown negotiations? We're talking billions in welfare, here . . .

Photo above- mirror image. British citizens protest cuts to their "free" healthcare. Their NHS already excludes illegal aliens, which is at the center of the US government shutdown debate.

Clearly, closing federal parks and national monuments isn’t a crisis for the voting public. I’d have thought that air traffic controllers calling in sick might turn the tide, but then the control tower folks suddenly got better and came back to work when they heard that they might be fired entirely. Today’s crisis trial ballon is SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps). Various agencies are warning that the suspension of food stamps is at hand. See CBS link below.

President Trump is having difficulty explaining why he’s giving money away to Argentina (which sells its soybeans to China) and also to American soybean farmers who are hurting after China pivoted to Argentina for hog feed. Imagine what happens if welfare screeches to a halt. Food stamps could turn out to be a more compelling rallying cry than “no kings – stop treating us like pawns”.

Pessimists are saying the government shutdown could last until Thanksgiving. Actually, reporters at “The Hill” are saying this, but they don’t have any quotes from key senators or house members. The link below outlines more than dozen key calendar dates – paydays, health insurance open enrollment, etc – that will cause anguish between now and Thanksgiving.

I’m not sure what Republicans actually want at this stage. They’re certainly not going to get the sweeping medical care cuts they were originally baited with by the White House. Democrats want no cuts at all, and Republicans can't agree on what to cut.

The most coherent suggestion I’ve heard so far is “cut free medical care to illegal aliens, and talk about the other stuff later.” This would place America in the same category as the United Kingdom, which doesn’t provide free health care to illegal aliens. And also excludes certain visitors who have some sort of valid visa. This line in the sand could be easy to explain to American voters. Especially if their food stamps were cut off while various politicians and their flacks jet around the country trying to use unlimited alien health benefits as a 2026 campaign issue.

I’d go one step further, if it would help resolve this issue. What should happen to states which have declared themselves as "sanctuaries", and are harboring illegal aliens such as drug dealers, murder suspects, etc? Should they get their full allowance of federal health subsidies? If you’re going to break the rules, there should be consequences. An allowance cut?

I’m just sayin’ . . .

Every person in the UK, irrespective of immigration status, is entitled to receive emergency care free at point of delivery. Irregular migrants ("illegal aliens" is a term used only by the tabloids and Farageists) can also access free treatment for communicable diseases and other primary care at the discretion of the local family doctor. They are however required to pay the full cost of secondary care, the same as any other overseas visitor.

Our healthcare system is reliant upon immigration. My local NHS trust employs staff from over 100 nations.

Those illegal aliens have to go to England for medical care because all of their doctors and nurses are in England.

@SunshineGirl and that's working out so well...

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@wildbill83 The Tories are not irregular migrants, they are the conservative politicians who have run our public services into the ground over the past 14 years. They were "kicked out" of power last year and the current Labour administration has an electoral mandate to restore a much loved public service.

Thank you for your informative post. I must admit that as a Canadian I don't get much information on the American government shut down. Even American News outlets don't seem to be covering it well.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@hippyjoe1955 they covered it for the first weekend, then lost interest.

The air traffic controllers are dummies. Of course, if only a few call in sick they might get fired but if a majority did, it would be impossible to fire all of them and, if any did get fired, all they would have to do then is simply refuse to work until everyone got rehired with full back pay and no diciplinary action taken against them. They are the most essential workers in the country.

@Diotrephes

Hmmmmmm
President Reagan fired over 11,000 striking air traffic controllers on August 5, 1981, after they refused to end their illegal strike despite being given a 48-hour ultimatum to return to work. The firings were a defining moment in his presidency and significantly impacted the labor movement in the United States
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@pdockal In such situations all of the workers must be united and act as one. There were about 17,500 air traffic controllers in 1981.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
I don't know. Taking away the food stamps from those that really need it is obscene when we give away billions in foreign aid!
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@pdockal That shouldn't happen either!
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Nitedoc

Your missing the point
It already happened

Congress is the issue when they get paid no matter what
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@pdockal Oh I know they do, but shouldn't.
exchrist · 36-40
The government is choosing to “be shutdown” in part bc republicans and TRUMP do not want the charges against him to be processed. Blame the democrats all you want but in reality the president and his “team” of representatives are refusing to play ball despite numerous proposals by democrats and other representatives (including republicans). If the legislature and president continue not to work they shouldn’t be being paid. Hopefully the u.s will actually pay its debt! With all the savings
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@exchrist i assume you have a link for this?
exchrist · 36-40
@SusanInFlorida a link to the history regarding the agreements I simply searched Wikipedia/google. I’ll post that link in a moment

They (gov) just have to vote for stuff...light work, right? So I say do the job and let the chips fall where they will. To shut down seems pretty crazy. Who or what's gonna benefit from this "fight" in the long run? When I gotta wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning I don't wanna do it but I gotta go to work. AND they're paid a sh*t ton I imagine...I don't get it.

NHS makes no determination of entitlement at point of use. If you don’t understand our system don’t make claims about it.

@wildbill83 upvoted. in fact, i'd support a law which mandates that before ANY bill can be voted on, it has to be read in full, out loud, to the senate and house.

this would help make legislation more concise, and eliminate the claims of "how was I to know . . . ?"
