It seems most people in the United States don't feel that they strongly match either of the two parties.

Modern politics isn't relatable for actual human beings. Throughout the western world both right wing and "left-wing" parties are both right authoritarian. So when a politician comes along that is actually left, the general public call them soft (with influence by the media, of course).
