Do you identify particularly as a republican or as a democrat?

It's shocking when I study American history in school and I find out how much of a complete 180 the republican party has done since it was first created.

@BlueMetalChick: Very true, when it was first formed it was very much the progressive party when Lincoln formed it. Back then the Whigs and Know Nothings (can you believe that name) were the "Conservatives".

@Pfuzylogic: Actually the uncaring party has always been the Democrats and they remain so. The democrats love the poor therefore they want everyone to be poor. The republicans love the rich therefore they want everyone to be rich. Through out history is is shown that the more we try to live another's life for them through free money or free medical care or free whatever the more that person becomes impoverished. To increase wealth you create it not share it.

@BlueMetalChick: Nativists and even populists and nationalists such as those following Trump now. Immigration was the big issue in the middle and late 19th century with the Irish seen as the enemy with the police killing many in Cincinnati during a protest. The Irish were treated as scum.

The Democrats became defined with the FDR or WW 2 years when the huge programs such as Social Security and Welfare were formed. In 1965 when the Civil Rights legislation was created in response to the peaceful marches of MLK Jr. and John Lewis.
