An early supporter of the Nazis, Niemöller gradually abandoned his pro-Nazi views and after he signed a petition highly critical of Nazi policies that were incompatible with the Christian virtue of charity, he was arrested in 1937 and imprisoned in the concentration camp at Sachsenhausen and later at Dachau.

In April 1945 he was transported with about 140 other high-valued prisoners to Alpenfestung, with the SS troops transporting them under orders to execute them all if rescue by the Allies was imminent. But troops from the regular German army took protective custody of them. The prisoners were soon liberated by advanced units of the U.S. Seventh Army.
