The smart monkey gives away just enough of his hoard to keep enough other monkeys alive to warn him about leopards so he can sleep in peace.

Greed, coupled with forethought and restraint doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

Or not. Studies show monkeys murder, got to "war", etc. -- pretty much everything humans do. I wouldn't put hoarding beyond the head monkey -- or a very sly one.
