How tariffs actually work

A product costs $10
Let's say there is a 25% tariff, the importer (in the US) pays $2.50 to the government.
So the item they bought cost them $12.50
They sell to a distributor with their standard profit margin. Let's say it's 30% if would cost $16.25
They sell to a retail store with a 30% margin. $21.12
Retail markup depends on the type item. Could be 5% - 100%. Lets say it's 50%. You pay $31.69. At no point does the country of origin pay the USA anything.

The biggest hike of domestic taxes in American history.
@SunshineGirl affecting mostly lower income people

@JonLosAngeles66 Yes, sales taxes are by their nature regressive and end up costing the poorest more. Income taxes are a fairer way of spreading the burden. Land taxes (levied on capital) are fairest of all.

@SunshineGirl Warren Buffet has frequently pointed that he pays less income tax than his secretary. Mark Zuckerburg at Facebook pays income tax on his $1 a year salary, obviously not much of a tax bill!

You're not going to get more money by increasing income tax.

@Lizzie42 Not without significant reform and a shift in ethical attitudes. Property taxes are difficult to evade and are very efficient to collect. It is not a good idea, howeve, to put all your tax eggs in one basket.

@SunshineGirl But the USA already has property taxes.

I'd assume that Zuckerburg thinks it is a good idea to pay income tax on a $1 salary

@Lizzie42 The post is about how to spread the burden of taxation more equitably. If Trump needs this additional revenue, it would make more economic sense to increase the rate by which peoples' capital assets are taxed rather than that on everyday consumer goods.

@SunshineGirl "The post is about how to spread the burden of taxation more equitably."

Whenever anyone says that they mean to someone other than me.

@Lizzie42 We're not all Zuckerbergs . .
