As scholars of genocide, we demand an end to Israel’s atrocities.

As scholars of genocide, we demand an end to Israel’s atrocities.

Within weeks, 400 colleagues joined our organization. We say: it is not too late to save lives. End the genocide now.

The world has stood by as Israel has murdered tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, wounded more than double that number, buried countless more under the rubble and devastated civilian infrastructure. The territory’s survivors, displaced repeatedly by the Israeli military, are in a state of enforced starvation and utter precarity. Despite Israel’s ban on international journalists, witnesses and victims are live streaming unbearable images and videos of emaciated children and adults shot while desperately seeking aid. Israeli officials have proposed the construction of what would be concentration camps and the deportation of surviving Palestinians.

Protesting over Gaza’s starvation feels like screaming into a void – but we mustn’t stop.

Motivated by our deep scholarly and ethical engagement with political violence and mass atrocity, including the Nazi genocide of Jewish people, we helped found the Genocide and Holocaust Studies Crisis Network in April. More than 400 scholars of genocide and Holocaust studies from two dozen countries joined within weeks of its launch. The rapid growth of the group testifies to the urgency of this moment. Today, along with hundreds of humanitarian organizations, dozens of governments, and millions of protesting students and citizens across the globe, we call for immediate concrete measures to prevent further atrocity crimes and to protect civilians.

Since the 7 October massacre, Israeli officials and their accomplices have justified genocidal violence against Palestinians by equating Hamas with Nazism, instrumentalizing the memory of the Holocaust to advance, rather than prevent, mass violence. Meanwhile, too many governments materially support the genocide in Gaza while silencing protest. Even as the tone of some official statements has become more critical of Israel in recent weeks, many states continue to supply Israel with lethal weapons, shield Israeli leaders from international arrest warrants and fuel investment in the Israeli war economy. International pressure can work, but we need much more of it.

The emergency is in front of us. And yet, some prominent scholars of the Holocaust continue to engage in open denialism or outright approval of mass atrocities perpetrated by Israel. Scholarly associations, universities and institutions dedicated to Holocaust research, education and commemoration not only remain silent in the face of Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza but provide ideological cover for Israel’s blatant violations of international law. Institutions such as Yad Vashem and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum adhere to a “Palestine exception” when opposing genocide and mass atrocity. At the same time, organizations dedicated to combating prejudice, such as the Anti-Defamation League, use spurious accusations of antisemitism to silence or discredit those who dare to speak out.

We are determined to challenge this moral and political capitulation.

We created the Genocide and Holocaust Studies Crisis Network to do just that. We pledge to support Palestinians as they exercise their rights to education and cultural heritage in the face of massive destruction of their schools, archives and memory sites. We commit to pressuring our institutions to confront the contradictions between their stated commitment to “never again” and their silence or complicity in the face of Gaza. In light of ongoing genocidal violence and the return of authoritarian regimes, we will provide new resources and syllabuses in order to teach rigorously about the past in the context of our ever more vulnerable present. We will offer solidarity and support to our students and colleagues who run grave personal and professional risks for speaking out.

We contest the widespread “conspiracy of helplessness” and the normalization of mass violence and starvation in Gaza. We have learned from history that there are many ways in which states can take action in response to crimes against humanity. We urge all states who signed the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to fulfill their responsibilities under international law: demand and enforce a permanent ceasefire, an arms embargo, the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip, unimpeded distribution of humanitarian aid, and equality and self-determination for all Palestinians.

As members of the Genocide and Holocaust Studies Crisis Network, we say: it is not too late to save lives. End the genocide now.

I agree that what is happening in Gaza is a horror, a tragedy and a crime against humanity.

And Hamas can stop it today. If they care about their people Hamas leadership should surrender. I suspect they are safe and have plenty to eat in their hideaways both in Gaza dnd other countries.

Israel can stop it today too. But they've made it clear they are not going to do so until Hamas is finished.

October 7 reveals widespread human rights abuses by Hamas fighters and others who followed them through the fence from the Gaza Strip and draws up a comprehensive list of those killed.

But the investigation by the I-Unit, which examined hours of footage from CCTV, dashcams, personal phones and headcams of killed Hamas fighters, has also found that many of the stories that came out in the days following the attack were false.

These include claims of atrocities such as the mass killing and beheading of babies as well as allegations of widespread and
systematic rape – stories that were used repeatedly by politicians in Israel and the West to justify the ferocity of the subsequent bombardment of the Gaza Strip, which has so far killed nearly 53,000 people.

After a thorough analysis of all available data, the I-Unit concluded that claims by the Israeli army that it found eight burned babies at a house in Kibbutz Be’eri were untrue. The analysis found that there were no babies in the house, and the 12 people inside were almost certainly killed by Israeli forces when they stormed the building.

This was one of a number of incidents where the police and army appear to have killed Israeli citizens. The I-Unit identified 19 such victims, but the true figure is likely to be higher. It also identified 27 captives who died between their homes and the Gaza fence in circumstances that have not been explained.

Gun camera footage from Israeli Apache helicopters shows numerous strikes on vehicles and individuals making their way back to Gaza.

“My concern with this footage is we cannot tell whether they are Hamas gunmen or …. hostages. And I don’t believe the helicopter pilot, or the machine gun operator would be able to tell either,” said Chris Cobb-Smith, a British army veteran and human rights researcher.

The film features an interview with Yossi Landau, the southern commander of Zaka, a volunteer organisation tasked with collecting bodies after the October 7 violence. The I-Unit confronts Landau with evidence that many of the stories of atrocities Zaka relayed to the media were highly questionable.

The I-Unit also examined claims that widespread sexual violence had occurred on October 7. It concluded that while isolated rapes may have taken place, there was insufficient evidence to support allegations that rape had been “widespread and systematic”.

“To show that it was widespread and systematic, we would need a lot more evidence than has come to light to date and a lot more corroborative evidence than is being put out there,” says Madeleine Rees, general secretary of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

@sunsporter1649 You are funny!
Do you remember when Netanyahu supported Hamas?

If course you don't.

Bibi isn't too popular in Israel.....just ask the families of the hostages.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@JSul3 Oct 7 never happened, right?
JSul3 · 70-79
@sunsporter1649 Never said that.

Over 53k killed and counting in Gaza.
How many more must die to satisfy your bloodlust?
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@JSul3 Easy solution, the raghead terrorists are losing as big as the axis powers did in the big war, smart folks would give it up to protect their population, the war stops, the hostages are recovered, and peace reigns over the area
JSul3 · 70-79
@sunsporter1649 World opinion on Bibi and Israel is getting worse by the day.
They know a genocide when they see one.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@JSul3 And Oct 7 was a mostly peaceful demonstration, right?
JSul3 · 70-79
@sunsporter1649 Just stop.
Bibi has killed over 53k people in Gaza.

How many more must die to satisfy your bloodlust?
@JSul3 At this point, Zionists aren't even trying to defend the genocide anymore.

@MoveAlong Israel is funding the Hamas leadership so that they can have an excuse for engaging in ethnic cleansing. It's just a con game like the orange traitor suing various companies for $billions. When he wins he gets the money without the companies visibly supporting him. Israel will continue to use the same tactic in other countries that it will soon attack that it has used in Gaza.
