Not to take anything away from FDR, but back then people generally were in favour of their own interests and voted that way which held political leaders in check to look out for the electorate.
Today, "the base" will just as easily vote against their own interests, promote programs that will harm them, their families, and their neighbours, and if told they must give up a son or daughter for sacrifice at most will meekly challenge they should be able to choose which one they give up while cheerily complying to prove to "the libs" just how heartless they can be.

@MarkPaul FDR understood something Trump and his MAGAts dont.. That an unemployed, poverty striken nation cant thrive. Even the rich wont make it in the long run without commerce, trade and enough people with enough money to support an economy.. The end game for Trumps vision is a tiny monoroty of Royalty, with a small local Aristocracy to keep the peasants in line. Its been tried..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman You're almost correct. Look, I have been studying this situation quite closely (from afar) and the end game for Cry-Baby-trump doesn't include anyone but him. Not his wife, his kids, those who behave in servitude to him, his cronies, not even his self-confessed lovers Kim Jung Un or Elon Musk. And, THAT is why he will eventually implode... if dementia doesn't claim him first.

@MarkPaul I think we agree completely.. But I refer to the bigger picture of the whole of American society (as it is now) Trump is merely the lever that will start the avalanche that will roll over him and everyone else. The people behind him are content for him to break the current model, so they can replace it with something that suits them..😷

Maga gets off to being subjugated by some rich a* hole though so they won't listen. I like the meme.

@Theyitis And they are wrong.. Most of Americas wealth now doesnt come from production or provision of services.. It comes from the wealth transfer from one person to another and according to the debunked trickle down theory, the wealth has to start at the top. In reality, most of it stayed there.😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Sure, but that doesn’t make them any less likely to believe it. It’s part of their identity, like cowboy boots, country music, fishing and hunting, pickup trucks, McDonald’s, and Fox News; furthermore, it shapes all of their political beliefs. No amount of evidence nor logic will ever convince them that simply not being rich is not something they need to be ashamed of or that maybe being a rich man in a poor country is rather shameful.

@Theyitis I agree with you.. And I accept thats why its never going to happen in America. I have talked around the subject with a few teaching psychologists and while opinions vary, they all agree there is something in the US society that seeks and rewards winning at any price of the individual, rather that seeking the general good for the group..Success can be selfish at the cost of others. The harm done doesnt matter as much if its no one you know..A lot of different factors are in the mix... While every culture has individuals like that, America actually teaches it.. And again, thats why I look purely at the money. I dont judge by right or wrong.. Just by the results in the long term..😷
God Bless FDR; NOT DJT!
