If you mean commercial pop music little of it now shows any originality or talent, or at least attempt at talent; but it is purely commercial, is thrown together but not by politicians, and you don't have to let it "brainwash" you.
There is a vast amount of very good music of all types being written and perfomed, plus a vast amount from the last 500 years being performed. All this is no less "mainstream" than the charts ephemera, even if the spreadsheet-jockeys and pseuds-in-suits who run the commercial radio stations and supermarkets think otherwise.
