At publishing time, it was disclosed that the New York Times editorial board welcomes the proposed name change for Times Square. The board had been lobbying for that change since the days of Walter Duranty, but had consistently been turned down by the City Council. The board is now cautiously optimistic that the change in name to Red Square will finally succeed, sources close to the matter said.
