Does LA have home rule over the LA police?

Some big US cities don’t. Kansas City and St Louis don’t. In both cases a result of their corrupt political histories.

Police are supposed to be public servants.
@MrBrownstone as is the mayor, the governor, all the elected officials and government employees.

@4meAndyou in home rule, the chief of police is hired by the elected city commissioners and the police are city employees. Without home rule, they have a separate board of commissioners, sometimes picked by the governor.

With home rule in a place like LA elected city officials would be on one hand supporting the rioters and on the other hand direct the police action which would make for an awkward situation.

Without home rule, it’s kind of like with the school board. Elected city officials have no authority over what the school board does or doesn’t do.
