I’ve been around 5 decades…

And I am noticing that things the Republicans of old were very strongly against are now suddenly good ideas under MAGA. 30 years ago I voted Republican because they stood for global free trade, right to personal privacy, and immigration policies that focused on criminals and immigration reform. Now I vote mainly democrat for the same reasons.

I say the same thing about the Dems . Obama Hillary and others did a 180 turn on many topics from 2008-2020.

@AthrillatheHunt examples?
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@trollslayer immigration is the biggest one. They both pulled a 180 on that between 2008 and 2012. Border security too.
@AthrillatheHunt Obama did go deporter in chief.

My biggest issue with Obama and co was when they did the whole "We tortured some folks, now forget about it." thing and then just basically continued neo con status quo all over again.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow it’s what they do (both sides ).
@AthrillatheHunt For the most part that was true, but the GOP has since gone full fascist.

Now I will probably piss some people off with this but the establishment democrats seem content to enable the fascists which is actually historically consistent with "liberal" bourgeois parties.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I don’t consider them fascists any more than I consider Dems commies. Both have centralists. Both have fringes.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow i get the feeling that the military is a “deep state” in this regard. They basically present to the president that there are no other options.
@AthrillatheHunt The GOP is fascist. Words have definitions. Pretending otherwise at this point is just denial.

The GOP was taken over by the far right a decade ago.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow trump gave the fringe a voice. And that fringe is not shy about their fascist intent.
@trollslayer And people like Marco Rubio sold out and went along because apparently holding power matters more than how he got it. Ditto with Vance.

@trollslayer Unfortunately a side effect of this though is on the American right selling out your principles gets rewarded. So it is unrealistic to think the few "good" Republicans left will do the right thing.

Hell even Mitt Romney only did the right thing on the way out to retirement.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Not sure if I would completely agree about Romney. He seems to have some integrity. But you are right, no non-maga republicans have any voice at all in the party
@trollslayer I didn't agree with Romney's politics but I think he had integrity. But my point was even he knew he could only say what he said on his way out the door.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow jeff flake or Liz Cheney didn’t care.
