Consumers dodge trillions in price hikes; Trump turns apoplectic after some court rules he can’t tax and spend as if congress didn’t exist.

Photo above – actor Mark Ruffalo impersonates Donald Trump in the new film “Mickey 17”, streaming on HBO Max . . .

Told’ja so. A few months ago I published a column expressing doubt that any part of the constitution allows a US president to arbitrarily raise taxes, spend money, or declare war. Yesterday the court agreed. (see link below).

But it’s hardly a real court. It’s the US Court of International Trade. Despite it’s obscurity. the USCIT does already have dozens of cases pending. Typically, some Chinese, Japanese, or South Korean corporation whining about a quota or tariff nobody ever heard of. Most of those disputes involve actual laws created by congress. The trade court has apparently never tried to take down a president before. We’ll see how this plays out. This case is probably going to run the gamut of superior courts, appellate courts, appeals courts, etc. before the US Supreme Court even decides if it will hear the case at all. That might take years.

The US Stock Market is soaring, of course. Presumably trillions of dollars in retaliatory taxes by every nation from Australia to Zimbabwe will also be suspended by their prime ministers, presidents, premiers, kings, and shahs. Ka-ching!

On the face of it, this looks like a victory for big business, and a defeat for Trump. And let’s not forget . . . you and I will save big bucks on foreign cars (even if they were made almost completely in the USA). Schlock from Amazon will still be delivered 24/7 at prices too good to resist. Why is your Amazon shopping Amazon cart empty? Check out this week's deals.

My theory isn’t that Trump isn’t really having conniptions over this court decision. His daily rants to raise and lower tariffs against foes and friends alike spiraled out of control and had become a farce. This was a kabuki play for the MAGA faithful. Those who are convinced that Trump and tariffs will lead us to back to the golden age of 1950’s American smokestack industries and stay at home moms. The president is probably relieved that he doesn’t have to keep this tariff frenzy up, and can pivot to tackle other issues which aggravate his base.

Before we close the curtain on this tariff drama however, let’s recall that we weren’t exactly in a safe space before Trump was inaugurated. Congress conspired with several previous presidents to burden us with a $37 trillion national debt, a tsunami of job seekers without visas, unaffordable housing, a fentanyl crisis, foreign hacking of our banks, electric grid, and government offices . . .

So today it’s almost as if the election never took place. Are you really happy about where we’re at?

I’m just sayin’ . . .

Trump has never understood, or cared how American democracy works. He’s always seen congress and the courts as impediments to just doing whatever he wants, the way a king or a dictator would. He respects them when they do what he wants, but has no respect for them when they don’t.

@RockerDad in agreement. i did not vote for trump in 2016 either. there's something wrong with the presidential primary system if it keeps giving us candidates like hillary, trump, and biden
@SusanInFlorida Hillary was not a perfect candidate, but she was well-qualified for the position , and I think she would have done a good job, particularly on the international front. A lot of people didn’t trust her, because a lot of her interactions with people felt a little forced or robotic. That said, of the ones you mentioned , she would have been the best candidate. I think Biden did a better job than he gets credit for, but his communication skills did deteriorate over time.

@RockerDad Hillary was not well qualified to be dog catcher! There was a highly qualified pair of candidates in 2016, but they only had media coverage if they said something "funny".

Biden did very little except stand where they told him stand and sit when someone told him to sit.
@GerOttman who would you have considered qualified in 2016?
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RockerDad Ill give you extra points if you even remember the name!

A two term republican governor with a running mate who was also a two term republican governor.

@GerOttman Jeb Bush?

@RockerDad Ouch! That hurts me deeply... Gary Johnson, two term governor of New Mexico and Bill Weld, two term governor of Massachusetts.

Solid conservative creds, extensive and successful executive resume. By any nonpartisan examination, highly qualified. However, as a 3rd party the only time the MSM allowed you to notice was if it could be spun as inept or funny.

It was a unique opportunity that may not happen again any time soon. The last two candidates were nothing special.
@GerOttman I’ve never heard of either of them. I’ve never voted Republican for anything ever. There are a handful I sort of like, but not many.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RockerDad You and a few million others never heard of them! I wonder why?
@GerOttman they didn’t brag about the size of their “hands” on national TV?
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RockerDad Oh if they did it would have been the lead story. you got a few minutes? look them up, tell me if you think they were qualified, however you might define that.
@GerOttman I don’t blame the media, I blame the voters for not doing their due diligence when they had the opportunity. The sad reality about 3rd party candidates is, that for the vast majority of them, a vote for them is basically a throw-away/protest vote. I think Bernie Sanders and Ross Perot have been the only ones that have ever had a sliver of a chance. For me, my approach is I vote against the person I don’t want. When it comes to a guy like Trump, I would have voted for virtually ANYONE he was running against, not because that other person was so great, but simply because they’re not Donald Trump.

@RockerDad See now I was the opposite. After the meltdown of '16 I'll never vote for another democrat as long as I live. Now I'm almost 70, so that may not be all that long... Ill see what i can do. I just vote for who I agree with and don't worry much about whether they are going to win. I mean its my vote.
@GerOttman I’m just the opposite. I think by voting for someone who couldn’t possibly win, only helps the side that I am against .
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RockerDad I guess you could call it voting my conscience. Im just trying to be honest with myself. Ive been me long enough to not be surprised when people disagree with me. Kinda comes with the turf.

If the libertarians run another quality candidate next election, that's probably who I'll vote for. Trump was my protest vote...
@GerOttman I understand your reasoning, but considering how close presidential elections have been lately, every vote really does count now, and many of the issues i care deeply about are often hanging in the balance, I can’t risk essentially sitting an election out,. I feel like the fate of the nation literally is hanging in the balance. I admit the outcome of this most recent election has shaken my hopes for the future of the country, to its core. There are a lot of days where i really lose hope altogether. The last several years have shown me how very fragile our democracy really is. I often fear that we have already passed the point of no return , and that I’m watching what used to be solid shared national beliefs crumble before our eyes. I feel like perhaps January 6th was the beginning of the end, there have been many more data points since, showing our downward trajectory. I often feel we are just witnessing the death-rattle of a once great nation that has lost its soul , and is willing to over-look anything in order to get a hollow win, for those who do not love or understand this democracy, and are only in it for their own personal gains.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RockerDad I have absolute and unshakable confidence in our republic. The only 'wasted' votes belong to those who stay home on election day. My vote counts!

To my way of thinking what happened on Jan. 6th was far less of a treasonous insurrection and more a staged costume role play meet-up. The real insurrection was the fake impeachment when the democrats tried to overturn the lawful election of a president.
@GerOttman that staged costume role play resulted in dozens of serious injuries of police officers and at least two deaths. It was also the most serious threat to the government in 150 years. As far as the impeachment, were it not for senate republicans’ tribalism, both impeachments would have been successful. Even more awful, was SCOTUS protecting him from dozens of serious felony charges in the Classified Documents case and the Jan 6th case, both of which he almost certainly would have lost. There was plenty of evidence against him in both of them. Never have we seen a president of either party, so truly unworthy of the office. All of the whataboutism in the world cannot change that. Had 1/6 happened 150 years earlier, he would have been hung, not re-elected.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RockerDad That's what you're told to believe. If that's what you actually believe, that's on you!
@GerOttman sadly, I was cursed with eyes, ears, morals, and ethics. I could not possibly hold Trump, MTG, Stephen Miller, Kash Patel, Musk, Bannon, and the others in lower esteem. If there is a hell, its fires burn for them.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RockerDad just send them to Minneapolis the next time antifa holds a mostly peaceful protest!
@GerOttman ..aaaand, you’re on ignore.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RockerDad you're well qualified in that area yourself. Im often convinced libs don't own mirrors!
