The 2026 House elections & the progressive caucus

Currently, 94 of the 213 House Democrats are members of the progressive caucus. That’s 44% or 21,6% of the entire House of Representatives.

In the House election last year 68 races were decided by a margin of 10% or lower. These districts are competitive and likely dispositive in determining the outcome of the 2026 House election. Of these 68 districts, only 5 are currently represented by members of the progressive caucus.

57% of all progressive caucus districts are urban
34,5 of all progressive caucus districts are suburban
8,5% of all progressive caucus districts are rural

The 8 rural districts are (in Vermont, Massachusetts, Oregon, California, Washington, Colorado, Maine & Wisconsin) So 7 districts in 7 blue states and 1 district in a swing state.

There’s not one competitive urban district currently represented by a Republican.
Meaning, the Democrat‘s only strategy is to hold as many of their swing districts (urban, suburban and rural) and flip exclusively suburban and rural districts.

What that means is that they need to moderate and marginalize the voices from the progressive caucus that might endanger their prospects for flipping the House in 2026.
