Can't compare a country with 6 million people (Denmark) with one that has 340 million (USA).

SW-User
@graphite Yes you can. That's just a cop-out. Especially as each state can set its own laws.

@SW-User Meanwhile.... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/27/scandinavian-miracle-brutal-truth-denmark-norway-sweden
Check out the "Denmark" part of the article. Not the paradise it's made out to be.
One small excerpt: The Danes of course also have highest taxes in the world

@graphite 2014. Very up to date. I'm not going to even bother. Except to say that Denmark no longer has the highest taxes in the world.
But here's the thing. These taxes actually get used to pay for free childcare, massively subsidised energy bills, free university, etc. etc.

@SW-User Denmark is another country with a sub-replacement-level birth rate (1.55). Perhaps not too many children to take care of?
Also, check out this bit on the highest personal tax rates in the world in 2025:
https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/highest-taxed-countries
1. Finland 3. Denmark.
https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/highest-taxed-countries
So they've dropped to third place. Yay.

@graphite Excuses excuses :) particularly as the US's is only marginally higher, and still sub.

@graphite But clearly Fox did in order to come to their considered and balanced assessment of the Danish economy . . 🤔
graphite · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl Denmark - Microscopic birth rates, sky-high tax rates. Let's all go there! 🤣 Who's going to pay the big taxes after they run out of future taxpayers?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@graphite The population of the European Union is 470 million citizens, all of whom have the freedom to move to and work in Denmark . . no shortage of taxpayers.
graphite · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl Looks like they aint moving there. Population's only a bit bigger in '24 than '14. When they run out of babies in their world paradise, the place will be desolate.😵💫
from AI Overview: Denmark is experiencing a declining birth rate, which is a significant factor contributing to a potential population decline. The country's total fertility rate (TFR) is currently around 1.5 children per woman, far below the replacement rate of 2.1 needed to maintain the population size. This means fewer children are being born, while the number of deaths and the aging population are increasing.

@graphite These demographic trends are common to most European countries (and I dare say the USA also). It's fortunate then that Europe is being "flooded" with migrants (some of them coming from America).

It's happening in the US, too. The TFR there is 1.6, only slightly higher than Denmark's and well below 2.1.
graphite · 61-69, M
@SW-User Except that we have 340 million people and they only have 6 million.

SW-User
@graphite So? It’s still the happiest place in the world to live.
graphite · 61-69, M
@SW-User I thought that was Disneyland?
from AI Overview:
While Denmark is often ranked among the happiest countries in the world, there's evidence of significant unhappiness and mental health challenges, particularly among young people. While the country has a robust welfare system and strong social support, factors like long, dark winters, social pressures, and the potential for loneliness can contribute to mental health struggles

@graphite Try telling the Disneyland “cast members” how happy they are.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@graphite The winters in Denmark are no longer than they are in the UK or New York. They are considerably less severe than the northern US.
