THIS is a "progressive" solution to the housing crisis? Allow students to live on campus in the cars?

SACRAMENTO, California — A progressive Democratic lawmaker is seeking a simple but jarring remedy of last resort for California’s college students navigating the state’s housing crisis: Let them sleep in their cars.

That's his idea of creating "affordable housing"? 🤬

How about, just for starters, lowering the cost of on-campus housing?

No it's not his solution. Apparently it takes too long to set up a regular housing solution. So this is in order to prevent students from sleeping on the streets all together. This would be a stop gap measure, until something can be set up.

Read your own article.

This is likely the result of Newsom's new laws on the homeless. People sleeping in cars on public streets are considered homeless.

That's a whole different issue.

Really? He just discovered there's a problem?

AB 90

Here's the text of his legislation.

https://legiscan.com/CA/text/AB90/id/3040031

Introduced on 2025-04-09.

I've looked at the Assembly Member's highlighted legislation going back to 2022 when he was first elected. I could not find anything that spotlighted doing anything to lower the cost of college housing or tuition out there.

You tell me? Did I miss something?

He is proposing a candy tax. Guess students would be shelling out more money to the state when they grab a snack at a vending machine.

I'm sure you get the idea. Maybe it's a publicity stunt, aimed at drawing attention to the issue. If so, it a rather crass one, especially the idea that students would sbe charged for sleeping in their own cars!

And this bill is facing skepticism even from members of Jackson’s party. Democrats during the March committee hearing questioned the feasibility of the bill and whether students would have to pay for the program.

🤔 Let's see. Vacant parking lot in the middle of the night. How can we leach even more money out of low-income students' pockets?

Assemblymember Corey Jackson, a Southern California Democrat who has a doctorate in social work, said lawmakers can build long-term solutions while offering an immediate stopgap for a “worst case scenario.” His proposal, which cleared its first committee last month, would require community colleges and the California State University system to plan for an overnight parking program for students.

@beckyromero also my added edit!

How about simply lowering the cost of student on-campus housing? Or the cost of tuition and books? Or providing vouchers to low-income students? Or paying student workers on campus an extra buck or two above the state minimum hourly wage? Or providing grants for community service work?

As you noted, Jackson has doctorate in social work. Is that really the best idea he can come up with?

And some people wonder why I advise Kamala Harris not to run for governor. That state is really messed up. Not her fault. Nor not even Newsom's. But Geeze Louise! Come up with better solutions than that!

@beckyromero because there's not enough room on campus!
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@beckyromero this is totally tied into the whole housing situation!

Not enough housing anywhere!

On-campus housing wasn't the only alternatives I mentioned above. And there's plenty more.

Tax-breaks for local residents willing to sponsor a student is another.

Using eminent domain to acquire high-vacant commercial properties and turn them into student housing units.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@beckyromero ALL OF THAT takes time!

This is just a stop gap measure!

Writing a voucher check "takes time"?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@beckyromero do you know how long it took me to get a voucher?

And I am a retired veteran!

If California was a deep-red state whose population didn't give a f*** about low income wage earners, I could understand (though not condone) that.

But you've got a super-majority of Democrats in the legislature. Can't you (not just you, but California voters) tell them to do their job?
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@beckyromero they had to move me 100 miles away just to get permanent housing!

If Gavin Newsom has time to go on Joe Rogan's podcast, he's got time to sign a few checks.
