Is Trump purposefully toying with tariffs to control things like the stock market so he can benefit from the fluctuations?

I think that's giving him more credit than he deserves.
He's using the tariffs as a bludgeon for his negotiating tactics. He's going to be fine if the global economy collapses. That means he can hold it hostage to try to force others to do what he wants.
He's worked that way his whole life. Swap out the tariffs with withholding pay from contract workers to renegotiate their pay after the work has been done or threatening banks that he will default on massive loans if they don't give him better terms. It's how he operates.
