Trump/Vance: The New Putin/Medvedev
Here's how Trump may try to retain power EVEN IF J.D. Vance is elected in 2028.
Imagine if...
It is noon in Washington on Saturday, January 20, 2029. Inauguration Day. A bearded man steps forward in front of the US Capitol and raises his right hand, placing his left on the Bible.
'I, James David Vance, do solemnly swear...'
Moments later, with a knowing smile, the new President of the United States declares: 'I resign.'
His running mate embraces him in a bear hug. The crowd of hundreds of thousands on the National Mall erupts in cheers of 'Trump, Trump, Trump' and 'Four More Years.'
Donald Trump has become President for a third time.

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution explicitly says:
However, the 12th Amendment says:
"Ineligible" would prevent Trump from being elected as President. But the question for SCOTUS would be does being elected VICE President rule out SUCCEEDING to the presidency.
It is doubtful that the U.S. Supreme Court would disqualify Trump as Vance's running mate. They would reject lawsuits challenging Trump being nominated as VICE president by stating he hasn't been ELECTED yet to ANYTHING in November 2028. So, any challenge wouldn't be taken up until Trump was either sworn in as VICE president or unless President Vance resigned. And in that event, would SCOTUS really rule out Trump succeeding to the presidency given that the electorate elected him VICE president knowing that it was the plan for him to serve a third term all along? No f****** way.
The Putin-Medvedev precedent
There is a modern precedent of sorts for Trump pursuing a third term, which is sometimes referred to as the Putin-Medvedev method.
In 2008 Putin was constitutionally barred from seeking a third consecutive term as president.
His laptog Dmitry Medvedev stood and was elected president, having publicly pledged to appoint Putin as his Prime Minister.
Putin then wielded power through Medvedev, for that term, and then stood again for president in 2012.

However, the 12th Amendment says:
No person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.
