And so it begins...

Washington: Denmark is in “crisis mode” after Donald Trump made a direct play for Greenland in a “horrendous” phone call with the country’s prime minister.

The US president spoke to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen for 45 minutes last week and made it clear he wanted to place Greenland under American control.
Trump then became “aggressive”, according to the newspaper, and threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark unless Greenland was sold to the US.

The call came after Trump refused to rule out using military force to take Greenland in a press conference on January 7, arguing that it was a matter of “national security” that the US gained an Arctic base.

Denmark is in NATO, so, if Trump uses military force he'd be attacking another NATO member. This could end up with America sending NATO troops in order to protect Greenland from American troops invading it.

@NativePortlander1970 nothing wrong with scepticism, time will tell

@NativePortlander1970 Yeah, maybe it was Antifa who made the call? 😝
@Convivial I completely agree 100%, I am naturally skeptical because I'm old enough to remember when the press only reported the news, editorializing was left to the page six column writers, who still had to be careful where they tread. Now every reporter is a pundit that freely spouts stuff bordering libel and slander.

@Burnley123 Cheney, Bush, Romney, McConnell, and Wallace, all hate Trump, even Fox turned on him for awhile, Murdoch's baby, who went so far as firing Tucker Carlson for refusing to play ball.

@NativePortlander1970 I get your point, but I watched Trump on the news a week or so ago. A journalist asked him if he would rule out force in his effort to get Greenland and Trump shook his head and said, "No, I can't rule out the option of using force." I couldn't believe it myself, but he said it. Force, to me, means economic or military. Either way, it's a threat against an ally and a fellow NATO member.
@Richard65 You have to ask Trump exactly why

@NativePortlander1970 I imagine his hawkish military advisers have told him Greenland has become a crucial territory to secure US security. So, Trump has decided he's going to be the president who manages to get it. But threatening a NATO ally is clearly not the way to go about it. I'm hoping that he doesn't think the aggressive tactics he likely used as a property dealer are suitable for negotiating with nation states about sovereign territory.
