This isn't anything really new. Immigrants were never REALLY ever greeted with open arms. And, that's part of the history of human behaviour everywhere, not just the USA. The USA let them in though, reluctantly yes and with open arms no. But, with extreme hazing and often harsh conditions they were allowed to work themselves up.
The difference now, to its own long-term detriment, the mood has turned extreme and specific types of people are being denied entry. If left unchecked for "too" long, the "Japan effect" will explode as there won't be enough people to service the aging and aged.
