Transition Live Updates: Trump Suggests U.S. Territorial Expansion and Airs Grievances

In an hourlong news conference at Mar-a-Lago, President-elect Donald J. Trump refused to rule out using military force to retake the Panama Canal, which was returned by treaty in the late 1990s, and acquire Greenland, which Mr. Trump said was necessary for U.S. national security.

He also wants to force Denmark to sell Greenland to the United States.

In a rambling, hourlong news conference, Mr. Trump also reiterated his threat that “all hell will break out in the Middle East” if the hostages being held by Hamas are not released by Inauguration Day, repeating the threat four times.

Mr. Trump refused to say whether he would pardon Jan. 6 rioters, and instead pivoted to criticism of the F.B.I. In his opening comments, he announced a multibillion-dollar plan to build data centers in multiple states bankrolled by investors from Dubai. He then repeatedly attacked President Biden and other foes.

PS: As Trump threatened to use military force to wrest back control of the Panama Canal, it should be noted that Panama has no army, per its constitution. “The Republic of Panama shall have no army,” the charter reads, adding that police forces may also protect the country’s borders in the event of external threats. “All Panamanians are obliged to take up arms to defend the national independence and territorial integrity of the State.”

@Northwest So he would potentially be using military force against civilians and running the risk of committing a serious war crime.

@SunshineGirl Does anybody really believe that US armed forces will attack Panama??? 😳
@helenS And Greenland FFS.

@helenS I am a literalist. I have no time or energy for second-guessing what the great sage may or may not have meant in his latest rambling. Words have consequences and wars have broken out over less.

@Adeptlinguist ... and Denmark if they refuse to surrender...

@SunshineGirl .. the "Football war" between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969 for example (Honduras won 1–0, causing Salvadoran fans to reportedly set fire to the stadium)!

@helenS Yep, don't mess with Latin Americans!

@SunshineGirl Even worse, according to wikipedia, a second game was held in San Salvador, El Salvador's capital, on 15 June 1969. Salvadoran fans, seeking vengeance, rioted outside the Honduran team's hotel, leading to several deaths. At the match's start, a dirty rag was flown instead of the Honduran flag. It was won 3–0 by El Salvador. Anti-Salvadoran riots occurred across Honduras following the loss.
Yeah, don't mess with those Latinos 😏
