No, the Dark Ages was when a few dozen magic practitioners with weapons from Isle of Mann took over all of Europe in a few decades. Bad architecture - those square spaces in the wall that people say you shoot arrows from, or throw sewerage - same city walls and same dumb drawbridge...
Americans were never a country, the invaders founded it. Many of them were Calvinists. In the puritanical Calvinist philosophy the rich deserve to rule the rest, God says so by making them rich.
Americans are a post religious Calvinist society, a meritocracy run by the talented and wealthy winners.
I imagine people know and voted to continue with that on purpose.
I imagine they sneer at all the alternatives. It has always been very dark there.
