To be fair, I bet a good chunk of Americans did not know Hawaii was a US Territory on 12/7/41, or had even heard of it.

Oh, I think most Americans in 1941 knew all about Hawai'i. And the Philippines, too. (the generation that fought the war with Spain was still alive).
But Americans of today?
I saw a story about one woman who thought Alaska was an island because of how maps portray it.
