Trump thinks he can silence student protesters. This isn't the Vietnam War generation. There will be a Civil War if Trump sends the Military

Trump’s nominates Harmeet Dhillon to lead Civil Rights Division of DOJ. Apparently she's one of those who believe dissenters should be arrested for criticizing Israel.

They want to put an end to the protests against Israel. They are claiming that those of us who are speaking out against Israel are antisemitic.

Whatever happened to free speech? We can criticize our own government but can't criticize Israel?
Get in line with the motivations for civil war, I guess.

And don't be surprised if your ability to criticize your own government is substantially changed.

Its interesting that you mentioned the civil war generation. One of MAGA's goals seems to be taking us back to at least the 40s or 50s so as to erase lessons learned.

I voted for Trump, hoping he would improve the economy and end the wars, but his cabinet choices are raising concerns. It indicates he might break his campaign promises. Every time I hear Trump speak, I genuinely feel like I made a big mistake. He's no longer talking about helping people or making the system fair; instead, he's focused on how much money corporations will make. A lot of people are regretting their vote.

I believe this generation is more informed. They don’t trust the media, and with the rise of social media and the ability to use VPNs, the government has less control over the free flow of information than it did before, when mainstream cable news and newspapers dominated the narrative.
@Jokersswild Trump's snake oil often sounds really good, doesn't it?

And I hope this generation ends up being better informed than prior ones, as opposed to just having more opinions and alternative facts.

The two things to read from this are:

1) Israel and it's supporters use accusations of anti-semetism as a cynical tool to de-legitimise dissent.

2) The political right are brazen hypocrites on free speech.

To give an example on this: there is a meetup group in my town called Cancelling Cancel Culture. They are anti woke and get very upset when racist trolls get kicked off social media. When people were getting fired for 'anti-semetism' (AKA being publicly critical of a state's genocide) it never even registered. They had a meeting on what Jordan Peterson thinks of the ME.

@Burnley123 Absolutely! Great point! What really frustrates me is the hypocrisy. Last year, Tim Scott introduced a bill to defund colleges and universities that promoted antisemitism. On the surface, that sounds good. The key issue lies in the wording. What exactly does 'promoting antisemitism' mean? Well, apparently, the DoE has been instructed to consider the Anti-Defamation League's definition of antisemitism. If you check the ADL's website, it clearly states that "anti-Zionism is considered antisemitism."

DOD Directive 5240.01

Revised Oct 25, 2024

The Secretary of Defense can approve "assistance in responding with assets with potential for lethality, or any situation in which it is reasonably foreseeable that providing the requested assistance may involve the use of force that is likely to result in lethal force, including death or serious bodily injury," in the official wording of the document.

Biden authorised use of military against civilians

@sunsporter1649 Wow, this is my first time seeing this. The average American doesn't know this stuff.

Let's criticize Indians. Make it personal for them.

Gotta keep those billions flowing to Israël with no questions.

@Crazywaterspring These are privileged Indians who come from the same families who supported the British Rule.

@Burnley123 AIPAC built itself into the most powerful player in USA politics, even though it's primarily concerned with Israel.

This is an anomaly, but AIPAC managed to silence all dissent, when it comes to criticizing Israeli government's conduct, and equated it with anti-semitism.

Since the Hamas attack on October 7th, joined by the Hizballah attack on October 8th, and the Houthi attempts to attack shortly after, AIPAC did not have to try much, other than activate its mailing list, and calling US Congress members.

The left needs to detach itself from Hamas. It's not only a losing battle, but it's also not the right one.

The real issue is creating a state Palestinians can truly govern themselves.

@Northwest I can't speak for the US context but the left in the UK has almost nobody who supports Hamas. I've been to demos and I'm on X but I've not seen a speaker praise Hamas or a journalist I follow praise them.

There are lots of attempts by the mainstream media to present the conflict as a Hamas vrs Israel binary but I don't accept that framing.

The institutional centre-left here (the Starmer Labour government) criticises the worst excesses of Netanyanhu but keeps selling the regime weapons. The cut in funding of 10% was a very weak and ineffective attempt to placate Muslim labour voters.
