Mitch McConnell Gets Standing Ovation After Taking a Subtle Swipe at Trump

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) took a subtle jab at President-elect Donald Trump during a speech on Saturday night.

Speaking at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the Kentucky senator claimed that current “influential voices” were forgetting the threat of China and Russia and neglecting the history of the Cold War.

“Within the party Ronald Reagan once led so capably, it is increasingly fashionable to suggest that the sort of global leadership he modeled is no longer America’s place,” McConnell said per Politico which also wrote that he received a “standing ovation” after his speech. “But let’s be absolutely clear: America will not be made great again by those who are content to manage our decline,” referring to Trump’s slogan and seemingly taking a swipe at the president-elect.

McConnell is right, but he's an active accomplice to the decline he has encouraged by trading with the (orange) devil. I don't take kindly to these complicit Republicans who suddenly want to hop on the fence by calling out Insurrectionist-Cry-Baby-trump while they enabled him.

McConnell is saying the right things, but his behaviour reeks of all the things he did wrong including sitting back while Cry-Baby-trump racially insulted his wife.

@MarkPaul

He could have stopped Trump in his tracks on the second impeachment.

@beckyromero Yeah. So disappointing. It's a lesson to be learned.

@MarkPaul he wants it both ways. He’s single-handedly responsible for handing Trump three SCOTUS judges

@RockerDad Except, Insurrectionist-Cry-Baby-trump doesn't want to share credit for that. He claims he did that all on his own. So, with "the base" at least, McConnell has nothing to show for his complicity.

A person can want conservative judges without supporting Il Duce.

But McConnell could have pushed to get Trump convicted on impeachment charges in January 2021 (with a prohibition tacked on to prevent him ever again running for federal office). With his support, the Senate could have gotten enough Republicans to reach 67 votes to convict. But McConnell, like others, probably thought Trump was finished without impeachment.
