I think the next few weeks will be critical as each faction within and around Syria positions itself for maximal leverage. The first foreign issue to resolve is the status of Russian forces on the coast, as they will continue to exert negative force and occupy key geography in economic terms. This will tie in to how the new Syrian leader choose to balance internal tensions with external concerns for stability. There are deals to be made, and hopefully his focus remains on what is best for his people. He shouldn’t get distracted by the Golan except to assure his neighbor of security and no territorial ambitions.
