I agree with you that Harris didn't lose solely because of her race and gender.

But all of the other reasons not to vote for Harris don't erase the fact that her race and gender were also factors for some voters, and Trump and Vance's comments seem to make it clear they knew that and exploited it.

I also agree with you that playing the race card, to the extent that Democrats even played it, was a losing strategy for them. They needed to turn out voters, and not turn them off.

Not because she is black, Obama already broke that ceiling, but because she is a woman. It's not the only reason of course, but I believe it's a large part.

Let's play devils advocate.

Harris was chosen because of the limited time, and the thought was the public already knew her, and that she could step into Biden's platform which they thought was a winner. Basically, they thought if not for Biden's age, he would be reelected, so why not put someone in with the same platform but younger.

What they didn't understand, is that the MAGA crowd are "feelings" based voters that can ignore any fact and "go with their gut". The democrats assumed that "Trump is a madman/fascist/anti democracy" was a strong enough message. The problem is that is too logical for a crowd that only goes as deep as the price of gas and the number at the bottom of their receipts, and whether the kids taking orders at Wendy's speak English.

Let's assume the Democrats instead nominate Mark Kelly. Here is a guy who is relatively new to politics, is not very well known nationally, and people know little about his platform. He is a Navy veteran and accomplished astronaut, has a bit of a sympathy factor because his wife was shot in the head in an assassination attempt. Being from a border state and having previously stressed border security, I can see him focusing more on that and distancing himself from Biden in that way. Does he do better than Harris?

My feeling is yes - but that is a bit "monday morning quarterback" because we are not having this discussion if Harris wins. That said, I think voters would be more likely to give Kelly, while mostly unknown, a benefit of a doubt because he is male and white and will naturally judge his accomplishments based upon merit. Note how everything on Harris' resume was questioned - whether she was a "diversity" candidate, whether she got her position in the bedroom, etc. Those are all established sexist dog whistles. The assumption was she had to prove herself worthy. This same standard would not have been applied to Mark Kelly, nor was it applied to Trump in 2016. In 2016, nobody cared how Trump got his money, whom he had affairs with, how many times his businesses went bankrupt. All they saw was a guy who had a lot of money and influence and they just assumed he knew what he was doing.

Not the main reason. But there are double standards whereby all being equal people will choose what they are familiar with, which in this case is a white man. In other words, take any issue - economy, gaza, etc. Folks who may be unsure of who has the better plan will gravitate to Trump, in part because he is a former president, but also because he is a man and most people grew up with their fathers making most household decisions.

Note that within industrialized “western” countries, the USA is one of the few to have never had a female leader (president, PM). That is probably in part a product of our EC system of electing presidents that discourages 3rd parties and the dominance of religion in the USA.

Pew Research polled the question of women in high political office. Although people aren't self-reporting their objections to women in this survey, it's often the case that people will impute their own motives or opinions to others. So I read this as semi-self-reporting. And on that basis there seems to be enough sentiment - "many Americans aren't ready" - against women to swing a close election.

And for those who claim she lost because some people voted against her simply because of her gender and color, I would say sure there were, but I would venture to speculate that there were at least as many who voted FOR her simply BECAUSE of her gender and color, and overlooked all the perfectly obvious shortcomings of her record.

I've no idea. But why, given the extensive policy failures you have listed abive, did Trump repeatedly make lurid and unsubstantiated speculation about Harris's ethnicity and sexual conduct, if not to appeal to the prejudices of his supporters?

I don't know if race played a role, but gender absolutely did. Young men who are growing up on incel content voted for Trump, going against the long tradition of young people voting Democrat.

I will also add that I don't think there was too much "conscious" choice to not vote for Harris because of gender, just that I don't think there was too much conscious choice not to vote for Obama because of race. Those who consciously voted that way would have never voted Harris anyway. But amongst the average person who does not consider themselves sexist or racist, societal upbringing may have led them to trust Trump more than Harris on various issues and made them more willing to put aside Trump's flaws. This happens on a subconscious level that is rooted in human instinct and takes an internal effort to change. So, it is not fair to label most Trump voters as "sexist" or "racist" (although there certainly are some) - it is systemic racism that in inherent to human nature and our societal structure.

It may well be part of the reason. My own belief is that Americans are very gullible and they foolhardy(generally speaking) worship rich people. They idolize wealth and think wealthy people are good figureheads. The media brainwashes many..that's why it exists.
