Smoking to be banned outside schools and hospitals in the UK, but pubs get a reprieve

Excellent! Sensible policies for a happier Britain!
why cant ppl smoke if they choose too.?

when did the high and mighty get so much powah?..

if a person was to open an establishment that caters for smokers.
the cancel culture would still have them shut down even tho they had no intention of attending....

control freaks make my bung hole itch
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout There's been next to no pushback over the smoking ban. I remember it had the added bonus of my clothes not stinking of smoke when I went out to clubs and stuff.
@Mesthartiya pub culture is dead in australia.. establishments closing down left right and centre because they cant pay the bills.

turns out the smokers now stay hom and drink where theyre not pestered for smoking..

just saying..nobody cared about smokers until the TV told them to.
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Fair enough. Kinda happening here too. I don't think it's so much because of smoking (the ban came in in 2007); closures have increased massively since covid.

It’s a shame that’s not already a law

Im glad pubs werent affected tbh they're already losing business
Glad it stands with hospitals and schools!
@Gangstress Yeah, it's common sense. Working in hospitals myself I don't understand the logic. Although it is interesting how quickly a patient will get up and walk if it means going off the ward for a cigarette🤷🏻‍♂

@Gangstress Common sense

This has been the law in Canada for years, as well as bars and restaurants.
When they banned smoking in restaurants and bars in Los Angeles it made life so much better.
@JonLosAngeles66 I will never forget a comedy sketch I saw in the 90s talking about smoking in public places.

They said having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a pissing section in a public pool. lol
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I remember growing up in Providence, RI my favorite pizza place had one table that's no smoking. lol. You were better off sitting next to the no smoking section.
@JonLosAngeles66 The old airport and the hospitals used to have closed off rooms with plexi glass so they looked like giant fish tanks and it looked likes someone locked them in with a fog machine. And that was with filtration systems. It was scary.
Shit. In Canada that was done in the 90s. And full public smoking bans by the end of the decade. This feels like a time warp.

Same goes here but in all public places.
People seem to think its ok to spark up a joint anywhere.
Smoking outside of hospitals is already banned... has been for years. I feel like a child, heading behind the bike shed for a cigarette whenever I need a cigarette at hospital appointments.

You're not going to stop smokers from smoking by banning it out, people will just get more shady about smoking in these places.

It seems fair to me.. Those people willing to sacrifice their health just to pay more taxes and reduce the burden on the rest of us deserve some compensation in exchange for shortening their lives..😷
It is still legal to smoke outside schools and hospitals at the moment? I hope the reprieve for pubs means smoking remains allowed outside and not inside.
@NerdyPotato Many hospitals are already no smoking permitted anywhere in the grounds.

Doesn't really make much difference, patients and visitors are still congregating at the entrance to some hospitals for a cigarette.

@Picklebobble2 that's quite the false slippery slope fallacy. None of those issues harm the people around them, so it's a huge step from banning smoking to banning those.

@NerdyPotato Really ?
You think 'second hand smoke' is more dangerous/lethal/annoying than alcohol consumption ?

How many social problems are down to booze ?
Everything from family relationships to drunk drivers.
Yet nobody's considering banning that.

Not exactly difficult to get hold of all the stuff contributing to obesity either is it.
Currently.

Like i say. Today it suits some to single out smokers.
Tomorrow it may well be something you're using.
@Picklebobble2 the tolerance for alcohol is indeed weird compared to smoking. That's quite dangerous to other people as well, albeit not as directly. I think it's because "responsible" use doesn't affect others though, unlike smoking. Sugar and fat doesn't harm others at all though, so I really don't see this as a start towards a ban on those.

And with smoking: "your freedom ends where another person's freedom begins" isn't a new concept.
