Moldova votes to join EU

Despite "unprecedented interference and intimidation by Russia and its proxies", Moldova backed proposed constitutional changes and a commitment to joining the EU.

In recent weeks money has reportedly flowed from Moscow. Ilan Shor, a Moldovan businessman living in Russia openly offered cash to Moldovans to abstain or vote against the proposal.

Looks like Elon Musk may have to dig a bit deeper into his pockets 😉

I think a lot of them were influenced to abstain or vote against because the changes were supposed to pass easily. In the end, it was a wafer thin margin.

Still good news though.

@SW-User If it had been a free and fair ballot the changes would have passed easily and Sandu would already have been returned to office. But it is still a good result . . the exit polls last night were predicting a No.

@SunshineGirl Indeed. And apparently it's a non-binding referendum anyway, and they would have pressed ahead with application anyway. Besides, it seems clear that the Moldovan people did vote for it, so it was the right result 😊
