MAGA and what it means

Make America Great Again

This is not asked in order to jeer, really I wondered exactly what section to post this in.

But I'm asking :- WHEN was America GREAT?

I'd like to know just what those in MAGA hats see as "greatness", what age are we talking about.

(I'm in the UK and often those who voted for Brexit seemed to have some sort of idea of a golden age in the past that was lost, and needed to be regained. The days of Empire! The spirit of the blitz!)

Was it when "men were men"? An age when someone born the very lowest could yet reach the very highest? Do we go back to the Wild West?

I read once a biography of Harry Truman. I was greatly impressed by the man. Maybe others would not agree.

Well, I'm rambling a bit, but my question remains - and I have genuine interest. Not looking for disputes and mud slinging.

Just asking. When exactly was America great, and of what did such greatness consist?

Thanks

Well, reading through the thread (I would not advocate this if you have a weak heart) at least I now have a better idea of what the MAGA folk mean by "thinking for themselves" - it means totally ignoring all the copious evidence that exists for anything counter to their own opinion, and instead to keep insisting upon the contrary.

😀

@LesDawsonsPiano Since you are so smart what evidence do you imagine runs counter to the MAGA ideals?
LesDawsonsPiano · 70-79
@hippyjoe1955 Hello Joe, quote me where I claim to be smart.

As far as your question, I think the thread testifies to how nebulous the word "again" becomes when my question is raised. Therefore to present "evidence" against such an "ideal" becomes, quite frankly, impossible.

We all would like a better world, but simplistic slogans, worn as some sort of badge of honour, contribute little, if anything. And when certain of those who use such slogans then automatically label anyone who disagrees with them as "sheep" (see this thread) one certainly has to question their own ability to think clearly and constructively.

All the best

@LesDawsonsPiano So you can't answer my question and try to obviscate by pretending there is some deep meaning. The fact is you have no idea what you are even talking about. I find that hilarious. Nice try though.
LesDawsonsPiano · 70-79
@hippyjoe1955 I DID answer. I.e. Given that the MAGA ideal is in effect vacuous it is impossible to present the evidence against it that you initially demanded.

So in fact it is the MAGA' s who in general.who don't know what they are talking about.

Laugh at what you like. I'm really not bothered.

All the best.

@LesDawsonsPiano Do you honestly think your slogans were an answer? Really? Wow!
LesDawsonsPiano · 70-79
@hippyjoe1955 What slogans?
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@LesDawsonsPiano Go back and read what you wrote. Pure sloganeering. Too funny that you can't see them.
LesDawsonsPiano · 70-79
@hippyjoe1955 Quote me. Or just go away.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@LesDawsonsPiano Still with the slogans? Really is that the best you have? You don't even know what a slogan actually is. Here is a clue likely lost on you and your progressivism. The world is not getting better each day. It is degenerating. It is falling apart. Our job as humans is to keep the bad stuff at bay as long as we can. We have failed miserably. Look at the degeneracy of our present nations. Britain is trying to eliminate free speech. Dare to question the official speak then you will be prosecuted. Here in Canada we have homeless people on every street corner. Drug addiction is rampant. Unemployment is climbing. People are fleeing from province to province in hopes of finding a job and an affordable house. While I agree with Trump's desire to go back to a better world I know that it can never be accomplished though political means. The Church (the light on the lamp stand, the city on the hill) must get its act together and begin to defeat the evils of this world with the Words that proceed from the mouth of God.
LesDawsonsPiano · 70-79
@hippyjoe1955 Oh! More accusations. All unsubstantiated.

Now we have my "progressiveness"!! Again, quote me to substantiate this.

And then some nebulous appeal to the "city on the hill", the Church!

Hopefully you will now just drift away and stop your attacks upon me.

All the best
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@LesDawsonsPiano Typical progressive. Has no idea where you came from or where you are going but you are certain that things are constantly improving just like your idol Darwin thought. Too Funny!
LesDawsonsPiano · 70-79
@hippyjoe1955 Good grief man! Quote me. PLEASE.

Why on earth are you talking about Darwin? What on earth do you know about me to say that I have no idea about where I came from or where I am going to?

Not to believe in your own "Church on a Hill" (whatever you mean by that) simply does not justify your claims about myself.

Just go away.

One more unwarranted personal attack and I will simply block you.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@LesDawsonsPiano You truly are lacking in the understanding of the arc of history aren't you. Amazing. I thought the British were reasonably educated. I guess I was wrong.
LesDawsonsPiano · 70-79
@hippyjoe1955 Yet another totally unsubstantiated accusation. I have never mentioned anywhere anything at all about what may be, or may not be, the "arc of history'.

Then yet another insinuation that I am uneducated.

Really mate, you take the biscuit (as we say in the UK) You are not quite my cup of tea (as we also say)

I'll forgo the dubious pleasures of hearing more from you about "the Church on a Hill", and will now block you.

Sincerely, all the best. Goodbye.
