What is the reason for the high cost of a college education?

Poll - Total Votes: 14
Colleges are price gouging because student loans are guaranteed by the government
Colleges are a guarantee of success in this economy, hence the high cost.
A prestigious name (Harvard, Yale, Georgetown,) is a market draw, which increases demand.

A college degree doesn't guarantee success, but it make the possibility of success possible.
@BohemianBabe
..for who? When everyone out there has the exact same credentials from college, we're back to a level playing field once again.
@swirlie That's why there are different majors in college. Plus, a lot of people don't have college degrees and it's infinitely harder for them to have a successful career.
@BohemianBabe
Yes, I realize what the different majors are for, but if everyone has the same credentials when they all graduate, then nobody has an edge over anyone else except those who have no academic credentials at all.
@swirlie Yeah, but that's not how it works. The credentials you have are based on which college you went to and which classes you took. It's not like everyone goes to one college with one set of classes.
@BohemianBabe
Yes, that is correct! My point was, there isn't just one person graduating from that sought-after college; there are thousands of people coming from that same place every year and they're all chasing the same few jobs that are available, yet they all have the same credentials between each other.
@swirlie How do they all have the same credentials if they're taking different classes in different schools?
@BohemianBabe
They all have the same credentials if they all graduated from the same school and majored in the same things.
@swirlie Yes, at that point it becomes more competitive. That's why I said a degree doesn't guarantee success, but it is required.
