The "party of family" strikes again - Votes against continuation of child tax credit

Yeah, yeah. It's all about the kids and the real American families.

(Washington Post) Senate Republicans blocked legislation Thursday to cut taxes for working families and extend some corporate tax breaks, dooming a bipartisan compromise that the House had overwhelmingly approved and raising the stakes on taxes for this fall’s elections.

The $79 billion legislation would have expanded eligibility for the child tax credit, or CTC, among the lowest-income families and adjusted payments for inflation for the 2024 and 2025 filing years.

It also would have bolstered certain business tax credits — including deductions for research and development, interest expenses and investments in equipment — that were limited in an effort to cap the total costs of President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cut law. The bill, a product of negotiations between Senate Democrats and House Republicans, passed the lower chamber with a large bipartisan majority in January.

But Senate Republicans mostly opposed the measure, reasoning that they could write a more conservative tax bill in 2025 if they win control of Congress and the White House.

Thou Shall Not Pass Any Legislation That Might Help Any Americans While A Democrat Occupies The White House.

@JSul3 You're on the money. And they actually admitted as much.

@Carla Yeah same thing with affordable health. Trump and the republicans claimed they would have a better plan than Obama care but did nothing to make it so – even when they controlled both houses. Cheers!
RockerDad · M
@Nanoose they had no health care plan in place

So pass this one, then improve on it later. This isn’t difficult.

Working people don't give them millions. There for we have no value for the Republicans.
Ynotisay · M
@Crazywaterspring And you'd almost think that working Republicans would catch on to that too, huh? Maybe next year when the small tax cuts for them expire, but continue for the richest, they'll wake up.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@Ynotisay They'll just blame the Ds. That explains the timing of the tax changes.
Ynotisay · M
@Crazywaterspring I think you're right and it played the biggest role in when they were created by Trump. It wasn't about the country or workers lives.
RockerDad · M
We should have cat tax credits instead!

1) They won't win control of Congress and WH.
2) Even if they did, nothing stops them from passing a new bill in 2025.
RockerDad · M
@trollslayer the congressional GOP is too focused on “owning the libs”, and Hunter Biden’s laptop to pass any actual policy.
