A weekend of hope

In France the far right National Rally is projected to come third in the second round of the parliamentary elections. A nation has rejected hatred and bigotry. The extraordinary gamble of President Macron (aka "Jupiter") appears to have paid off 🇫🇷

Britain's new government has formally cancelled the cruel and b*****t policy of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda. Not a single migrant was deported agsinst their will, but around £300 million may have been wasted on the scheme. The new Prisons minister is James Timpson, CEO of a shoe repair chain that is renowned for employing ex-offenders. Policy will shift from punishment to rehabilitation 🇬🇧

For the first time in years I am genuinely optimistic for the future.

@SunshineGirl A fellow septuagenarian friend and I were chatting on Facebook last week about a pair of walking boots he'd photographed; I joked that he wouldn't have got them at Timpson's, like we both got all our fashion shoes in our early teens 🤣

@ArtieKat I didn't know they actually once sold shoes. Now it's just small booths in shopping malls doing repairs, cutting keys, engraving trophies . .

@SunshineGirl The company completely reinvented itself some years ago when it was on the point of bankruptcy

@SunshineGirl I can't find a photo of the one nearest to where I grew up but this was a typical High Street look.

@ArtieKat I've always wondered how a company selling shoes could fail to be a success, but so many have disappeared from the high street.
