Americans seem to suffer with confirmation bias. If you vote the way they do, they’ll back you all the way even if it’s blatant nonsense.

I am not so sure this is just Americans. Humes in general tend to only hear that which confirms their beliefs, according to research that came out several years ago. Critical thinking that bases itself on discernible 'objective' fact is hurt by this tendency. When the best tools to combat this are denigrated - education and non-opinion based news - it gets worse.
