Soros-Backed Portland DA Mike Schmidt Loses Election To Tough-On-Crime Challenger Nathan Vasquez

Portland’s progressive District Attorney (DA) Mike Schmidt conceded victory to a tough-on-crime challenger after his policies faced heavy criticism for damaging the city.

TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk has dubbed the “landslide defeat” a “victory for sanity.”

Schmidt, the prosecutor for Multnomah County, which includes Portland, acknowledged his defeat to Nathan Vasquez shortly after 7 pm on Wednesday, Daily Mail reported.

“It is looking as if I will not be serving another four years as Multnomah County District Attorney,” Schmidt said in his concession speech.

“I have called Nathan Vasquez to congratulate him on his victory. While we do not always see eye to eye, I am committed to a smooth transition,” he added.

“Thank you to this amazing community for the support they have shown for this campaign,” he continued. “And thank you for the opportunity to serve these past four years. It is an honor I will cherish for a lifetime.”

The outlet reported that Schmidt was elected in May 2020 just before the death of George Floyd and the subsequent nationwide riots.

Schmidt vowed not to prosecute rioters unless there was evidence of “deliberate property damage, theft, or threat of force.”

Of 550 cases referred by police, only 47 went to trial, Daily Mail stated.

The outlet noted that homicides spiked from 57 to a record 96 during Schmidt’s first two years in office after the city council voted to slash $15 million from the police budget in 2020 amid the “defund the police” movement.

Oregon also became the first state to decriminalize possession of all hard drugs in 2020, with Schmidt hastening to implement the measure months before it took effect statewide.

The state eventually u-turned on that decision after fatal opioid overdoses surged from 280 in 2019 to 628 in the first six months of 2023, per Daily Mail.

Governor Tina Kotek effectively re-criminalized the possession of hard drugs in Oregon last month as a result,

Schmidt’s loss marks a significant defeat among liberal DAs nationwide following a heated election battle against one of his own prosecutors.

News of Schmidt’s concession sparked a wave of relief on social media and throughout Portland.

“Every Soros DA that gets replaced means more criminals off the streets,” one X user posted. “This needs to happen in every city in America where Soros has gotten his DAs situated.”
