Almost certainly. But why call an election now? Any ideas, anyone?

@MartinII inflation hit low for a few years.
Things he'd have maybe held on for.... Interest rates coming down. Actually if you dig into the inflation figures it's more things like the energy price cap etc therefore he risks the Monetary Policy Committee leaving rates high until some time later in the year, perhaps too late. Rwanda? Small boats higher this year and likely problems getting the flights and not seen as working so.... Why not go now?

@OldBrit I think the turnout will be one of the highest it's been for ages. People really hate the Tories.

@MartinII Things are not likely to get any better for the Tories than the current time, so why not. Also, Rishi has been clinging on as a caretaker for the best part of two years (the Treasury has really been in charge since the Truss debacle), and that must weigh heavily on one man.

@SW-User I hope it will be, particularly among the young. Exams will be over by 4 July, so no excuses there.

@SunshineGirl I agree that Sunak is probably fed up. But the economic indicators have been getting slightly better. Who knows what gaffes the Labour Party might have committed given a few more months. It almost certainly wouldn't have made any difference, but it still seems irresponsible from the point of view of the Conservative Party.

@SW-User I doubt that. People do hate the Tories, I agree, but support for Labour is quite shallow. More generally, there is a lot of disillusionment with conventional politics and parties. I think there will be a lot of abstentions and votes for minority parties.
