Also, identification doesn't always line up with real beliefs and actions. Most Americans who identify as conservative still agree with the Democrats on policy, and will vote for either party depending on the candidate.

Most Americans, including ones who identify as conservative or conservative-leaning, are pro-choice, want to raise the minimum wage, are fine with gay marriage, fine with gender-affirming care, want a ceasefire in Gaza, and want to expand the ACA.
This is why Republicans are constantly doing culture war nonsense about trans people and "wokeness" in the media. They don't want to talk about policy because they know Americans are against GOP policy.
