There are legal ways to contest elections, and Trump tried them. Such as filing lawsuits contesting the counts.
Such as filing appeals when the original suits were rejected.
Such as filing with SCOTUS, who refused to hear more appeals.
Such as requesting DoJ to look into election fraud.
Such as commissioning two different firms to look into election fraud: Simpatico Software, headed by Ken Block, and Berkeley Research Group.
Such as keeping the Simpatico & Berkeley results secret when they found no fraud.
Such as throwing up a YUGE web of lies about "stolen elections."
All legal, sunstroke. All those things are legal.

However, sunstroke,

creating slates of FALSE ELECTORS, many complete with forged paperwork, is illegal. It's a crime, sunstroke.

The first false electors trial will be in Georgia, prosecuted by Fani Willis. Ms Willis has gotten, i believe, EIGHT of Trump's plotters and false electors to turn state's evidence. The facts in this trial are very damning, if your initials are DJT.
