I have to disagree. This enlightened centre stuff is exactly why parliamentary style systems tend towards a steady march to the right. It is called the Ratchet effect. Because the new compromise with the right becomes the new baseline so there really is no re-calibrating. Well I guess that is not entirely true. WW2 reset things to a point.
